Json just posted this video from way back (2006). Check it out!
Recently Christian Hip Hop artists have doing a lot of soul searching. The question that everyone seems to be asking is what role does Art play in the life of a believer. Or to put it another way, does everything you do that is artistic need to deliberately contain the full Gospel.
It is an interesting debate that was handled very well at the Unashamed conference this year. Check it out here. Worth listening to.
Whatever the right answer is, I love what these guys do! To God be the glory no matter which view you hold!
Why We Listened:
The King Kulture series is a movement to use the art of Hip Hop to help end certain world tragedies. The proceeds from the self titled Compilation, "King Kulture", went to benefit Ecole de la Borne, a school in the Congo started by Christian missionaries. The first album raised over $10,000
The Stop the Traffic Album is focused on aiding organizations fighting human trafficking. Album proceeds will benefit a great organization based in, and focused on NYC, called NYCUP (New York City Urban Project).
I am really excited about this album and the group of artist they collected to do this benefit album.
Why You Should Too:
Some times these compilations have a lot of promise, but never live up. Not so with this Album. Stop the Traffic is a great album.
When you put FLAME, Andy Mineo, Sho Baraka, Json, Derek Minor and Propaganda on an album together I expect greatness, and we have not been disappointed!
But there were a few songs that really touched me or surprised me.
KIDD, an up and coming artist with Inflitrate Music, sets the tone for the album with a hard hitting song about things that we think are problems are nothing compared to the problems other people face.
His label mate Skrip had my favorite song on the album called "Show Them". Thought provoking and challenging...and "OH SO DOPE!"
Andy, Json, and Sho all killed their songs too!
But then there is the spoken word track by Janette. The bold and graphic lyrics cannot be forgotten. I think this is the crux of the project. Listening to a woman who was a victim of sex trafficking tell her story through a poem shows us the need; but it was he vulnerable cry for help that echos from every woman who from her childhood has been experiencing the horror of this slavery. I had to stop and pray after I listened to this track.
Sex trafficking is a major problem and I am glad that Rapzilla.com, and all the artist that agreed to be on the album are making the effort to raise awareness.
Count me as someone who will no longer turn a blind eye. BUY THIS ALBUM
